GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Glenville State in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Glenville on Saturday. The Rams earned an 8-1 win in game one and added an 8-6 triumph in the nightcap. The Rams extend their winning streak to 11 games and reached the 20-win mark for the season.
Senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) hit a two-run single to key a five-run first inning in game one.
Junior third baseman Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) went 2-for-3 and junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./ Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) added a 2-for-2 effort to lead the Rams in the opener.
Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (7.0 IP, 2 H,1 ER, 9 Ks, 0 BB) (6-0) tossed a two-hitter and gained a complete game win for the Rams.
Senior outfielder Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) went 1-for-3 and belted a grand slam to key a five-run third inning in the nightcap.
Wilson and senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC) each scored a pair of runs.
Sophomore starter Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (5-1) earned the win. Sophomore reliever Tyler Thomas (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) (1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 Ks, 0 BB) gained the save.
Shepherd improves to 20-7, 18-4 in conference play, while Glenville State falls to 4-21, 4-17. The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
