Barstad Tosses One-Hitter; Shepherd Softball Splits with Urbana

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. Shepherd University recorded a 12-0 win in five innings in the nightcap to gain a split with Urbana in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Blue Knights posted a 7-3 win in extra innings in game one.
Freshman starter Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (5.0 IP, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (3-6) tossed a one-hit shutout for the Rams in the nightcap. Urbana starter Cortney Moore (2.1 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
The Rams used a 14-hit attack en route to the five-inning victory.
Freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) went 2-for-4 with a grand slam to lead the Rams. Junior outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) added a 3-for-3 effort with three RBIs.
Senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville), freshman outfielder Rubie Teffeteller (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), and freshman designated player Jennifer Schofield (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) each added a pair of hits.
Katelyn Edwards doubled in the first inning for Urbana's only hit.
Urbana took a 2-0 lead in game one in the top of the 10th on a two-run homer by Edwards.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame behind RBI-doubles by junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) and Schofield.
The Blue Knights plated five runs in the 11th with Edwards hitting a two-run single to key the rally.
Snyder went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Haley Kolmerten (11.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 20 Ks, 1 BB) (9-3) picked up the win for the Blue Knights. Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (10.2 IP, 10 H, 7R, 4 ER, 10 Ks, 2 BB) (4-7) took the loss.
Shepherd moves to 10-18 overall, 1-9 in MEC play, while Urbana is now 17-7, 9-3. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Notre Dame College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
