BOWIE, Md. – Shepherd University swept Bowie State in non-conference softball doubleheader action at Bowie State on Tuesday. The Rams posted a 5-1 win in game one and added a 12-0 triumph in six innings in the nightcap. Shepherd runs its winning streak to five games.
Shepherd took a 1-0 in the first inning in game one as senior shortstop Jess Mason (Martinsburg, WV/Hedgesville) reached on an error and later scored on a double off the bat of junior first baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy).
The Bulldogs answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by Adria Lewis.
Shepherd added two more runs in the third on a two-run blast by Snyder.
The Rams increased their lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth when freshman third baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown).
Shepherd added its final run in the seventh as freshman designated player Jennifer Schofield (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) reached on an error and scored on a double by Taylor.
Snyder went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to pace the Rams.
Freshman pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 11 Ks, 3 BB) (6-7) gained the win for the Rams. Mariela Hernandez (7.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 Ks, 2 BB) (4-12) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the nightcap in the second with a two-run double by Witt keying the rally.
The Rams increased their lead to 6-0 behind a two-run by Taylor.
Shepherd sealed the win with six runs in the sixth inning. Freshman outfielder Rubie Teffeteller (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) smacked a three-run homer and freshman designated player Rachel Kline (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) added a three-run double to key the scoring outburst.
Junior second baseman Elisa Orlandi (Owings, MD/Northern), Mason, and Snyder each had three hits to lead a 17-hit attack.
Freshman pitcher Karly Pence (East Palestine, Ohio/East Palestine) (6.0 IP, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (1-2) tossed a four-hit shutout to gain the win for the Rams. Stefanie Ray (5.1 IP, 16 H, 12 ER, 2Ks, 4 BB) (1-7) took the loss for Bowie State.
Shepherd improves to 14-18 overall, while Bowie State falls to 7-25. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Virginia State for Strike Out Cancer Day at 1 p.m.
