CONCORD DEFEATS SHEPHERD BASEBALL
BECKLEY, W.Va. – Concord University recorded a 5-1 win over Shepherd University at the MEC Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Saturday. The loss eliminates Shepherd from the tournament.
Concord took a 1-0 lead in the third as Brandon Costa led off with a single and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt.
The Mountain Lions added a pair of runs in the fourth behind an RBI-double by Brad Sullivan and an RBI-single from Costa.
Joey Miller hit a two-out double in the fifth and later scored on a single by Joe Camp to give Concord a 4-0 advantage.
The Rams got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC) doubled and later scored on a ground out by junior outfielder Mark McCormick (Centreville, Va./Centreville).
Concord added another run in the seventh on a solo homer by Miller.
Miller went 2-for-5 to pace the Mountain Lions.
Porter went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Chris Kelly (9.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (8-2) gained the complete game win for the Mountain Lions. Sophomore starter Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 Ks, 3 BB) (6-4) took the loss.
Shepherd falls to 38-12, while Concord improves to 38-15. The Rams await word on seeding for the upcoming NCAA II regional tournament.
