WEST LAWN, Pa. – Shepherd University dropped a 4-1 decision to Seton Hill in second day action of the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Atlantic Regional Tournament at Owls Park at Ted Palka Park in the late game on Friday.
Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Garret Vrbanic singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Brendan Costantino.
The Griffins added a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Nick Sell led off with a single and scored on a double by Cody Herald. Herald later scored on a single by Matt Malacane.
Shepherd cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the seventh. Freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led off with a single and scored on a single by junior pinch hitter Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC).
Seton Hill added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. Verbanic singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Taylor Schmidt. He stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Brad Schnelle (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 Ks, 2 BB) (6-3) gained the win for the Griffins. Alex Haines earned his second save of the year. Senior Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (8.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 9 Ks, 2 BB) (11-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
Chris Miller, Vrbanic, and Malacane each had a pair of hits for the Griffins.
Carney went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams. Junior designated hitter Jason Hepple (Margate, Fla./Highland Christian Academy/Garrett CC) added a pair of hits.
Shepherd falls to 39-13, while Seton Hill improves to 38-15. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Kutztown at 4:30 p.m.
Notes: Hvozdovic (307) topped the 300-strikeout mark for his career… He also established a single season mark for most strikeouts with 100… Hvozdovic surpassed the old mark of 94 set by current Shepherd head coach
