Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Fairmont State in MEC baseball action at Fairmont on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 7-1 win in game one and added a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap

Trailing 1-0, Shepherd took a 4-1 lead in the second inning with a two-run single by senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) highlighting the rally.

The Rams added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa). Shepherd tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) led the Rams with a 3-for-4 effort with three runs scored.

Junior third baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa), freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando), and Messina each added a pair of hits.

Philip Longnecker and Nic Rush each had two hits for the Falcons.

Senior pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (Herndon, Va./Herndon) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (10-0) picked up the complete game win for the Rams. Ryan Fenwick (7.0 IP, 12 H, 7 ER, 5 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss for the Falcons.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap with a three-run single by Carney keying the rally.

Fairmont State scored a pair in the fourth and Shepherd added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run blast off the bat of senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC).

Jeremy Walter went 2-for-3 to lead the Falcons.

Sophomore pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (8-1) (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 2 BB) picked up the win, while junior Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Corey Lilly (7.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 2 Ks, 3 BB) took the loss for Fairmont State.

Shepherd moves to 35-10, 33-7 in conference play, while Fairmont State falls to 14-29, 12-24. The two teams return to action on Sunday at Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader as the Rams complete regular season play.
