FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Fairmont State in MEC baseball action at Fairmont on Sunday. The Rams recorded an 8-1 win in game one and rallied for a 9-7 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning in game one with a three-run homer by junior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) and an RBI-single by junior third baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) keying the rally.
The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Wine.
Shepherd added three runs in the fifth. Senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) belted a solo homer and senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) added a two-run single to highlight the scoring output.
The Rams added a run in the seventh as junior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) led off with a walk and later scored when Shemer walked with the bases loaded.
Sophomore starter Ryan Pansch (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (6-3) picked up the win. Falcon starter Nick Mayle (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 Ks, 2 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap behind a sacrifice fly by Wolfe and a and an RBI-ground out by Wilson.
Fairmont State scored four runs on three hits and one Shepherd error to take a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the frame.
The Falcons added two runs on a two-run blast by Cody Butts in the second to take a 6-2 lead.
Shepherd tied the game at 6-all with four runs in the third. A two-run homer by Coffey and an RBI-single by Wilson highlighted the rally.
Fairmont State took a 7-6 lead in the fourth behind an RBI-double by Philip Longnecker.
The Rams plated three runs in the sixth to gain the come-from-behind victory. Wolfe smacked a one-out solo blast to tie the game. Wilson followed with a walk and senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) launched a two-run homer to left to give the Rams the win.
Coffey led the Rams with a 3-for-4 effort, while junior outfielder Mark McCormick (Centreville, Va./Centreville) added a 2-for-3 effort.
Longnecker and Matt Emerick each had a pair of hits for the Falcons.
Redshirt-freshman Mac West (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge/Francis Marion) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (1-2) gained the win for the Rams with sophomore Tyler Thomas (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) (2) picking up the save. Nic Rush (3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) (4-5) took the loss for the Falcons.
Shepherd improves to 37-10, 35-7 in conference play, while Fairmont State falls to 14-31, 12-26. The top-seeded Rams complete regular season play and await pairings for the upcoming Mountain East Tournament.
