Shepherd Baseball Falls to Urbana

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Urbana University used a 14-hit attack  to gain a 12-7 win over Shepherd University in second day action of the MEC Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium on Friday.

Urbana plated five runs on four hits in the first inning with a two-run triple by Robert Tavone Jr. highlighting the rally.

The Blue Knights added a run in the second on an RBI-single by Roman Gammell.

Shepherd cut the lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the third behind a two-run double by senior outfielder Kyle Porter (Baltimore, Md./Good Counsel/CCBC).

The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4. Senior first baseman Brandon Coffey (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a single by senior outfielder Michael Lott (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge). Senior designated hitter Ryan Messina (St. James, NY/Smithtown East/Tampa) walked with the bases loaded to plate junior outfielder Mark McCormick (Centreville, Va./Centreville), who had reached on a single.

The Blue Knights took an 11-4 lead with five runs in the fifth. Jordan Pergrem had a two-run single to key the rally.

Shepherd added three runs in the eighth as junior shortstop Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) and Lott had an RBI-doubles, while freshman second baseman Jacob Carney (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Urbana added a run in the bottom of the eight on an RBI-double by Gammell.

Gammell and Tavone Jr. had three hits apiece to pace the Blue Knights.

Lott, Wolfe, and McCormick each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Jackson Everman  (4-4) (3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 0Ks, 3 BB) gained the win in relief for the Blue Knights. Sophomore pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (8-2) (2.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd falls to 38-11, while Urbana improves to 24-20. The Rams return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they face the loser of tonight's Concord-West Virginia State game.
