Shepherd Women's Soccer Blanks Chowan

Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C.  – Shepherd University handed host Chowan University an 8-0 setback in women's soccer action at Chowan in the season opener for both schools on Thursday.

Shepherd took a 5-0 lead into the break behind first half goals by freshman forward Lexy Junker (Fairfield, Pa./Fairfield), freshman midfielder/forward Taylor Harwood (Capon Bridge, W.Va./Hampshire), freshman midfielder  Megan Norton (Halltown, W.Va/Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy), freshman midfielder Stephanie Cox (Damascus, Md./Damascus), and sophomore midfielder/defender Rachel Sefton (Berryville, Va./Clarke County).

The Rams added three more tallies in the second half with senior midfielder Kelsey J. Smith (York, Pa./Central York) , Junker, and senior midfielder Lexi Vondrak (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) finding the back of the net.

Senior defender Angela Labella (Frederick, Md/Urbana) had the only assist on the day.

Sophomore Anna Mueller (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) (one save)  and freshman Catelynn Moore (Penn Laird, Va./Spotswood) combined on a shutout effort for the Rams. Marissa Ghani  (9) and Monica Hayward (3) teamed for 12 saves for the Hawks.

Shepherd held a 44-1 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Shepherd moves to 1-0 on the year , while Chowan falls to 0-1. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Ursuline for an 11;30 a.m. contest.
