Shepherd Women Down UVa-Wise for Tenth Win

Box Score WISE, Va.  – Sophomore guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and freshman guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) each scored 16 points to lead Shepherd University win over UVa-Wise in MEC women's basketball action at UVa-Wise on Saturday.

Mason hit on 6-of-12 shots from the floor with a 4-of-4 effort from the line. Arden connected on 6-of-10 field goals with a 4-of-4 performance from the charity stripe. Mason also dished out a team-high four assists, while Arden grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Hailey Brown (Annandale, Va./Annandale) added 10 points off the bench for the Rams.

Taylor Sandidge and Kayla Carey each had 15 points for the Cavaliers. Carey also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Blair Harding added 10 points and a game-high five assists.

Shepherd had a 34-27 lead at the break.

The Rams went on an 18-8 run to take a 10-point lead at 56-46 after a layup by senior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) with 9:22 left in the second half. Mason and Brown would each have six points during the run.  UVa-Wise would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Shepherd shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor with a 14.3 percent effort (1.7) from three-point range. The Rams shot 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe.

UVa-Wise connected on 33.3 percent (21-63) from the floor with a 22.2 percent (4-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers hit on 64.3 percent (9-14) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 42-35 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed 14.

Shepherd improves to 10-4, 7-1 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise drops to 5-9, 4-4. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Concord for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
