Wheeling Jesuit Edges Shepherd Men

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Eric Siefert scored 20 points and Kyle Ritz added 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Wheeling Jesuit to an 86-82 win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Senior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) led the Rams with 20 points and six assists.  He connected on 5-of-11 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. Cunningham was 7-of-9 from the foul line.

Freshman guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 19 points, while senior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) contributed 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) also hit for double figures with 10 points.

Pat Moseh added 15 points and Haywood Highsmith had 11 points and seven boards for the Cardinals.

Shepherd had a 39-37 lead at halftime as Davis (10) and McDonald (8) combined for 18 first half points.

The game featured six lead changes and 11 ties. Wheeling Jesuit took the lead for good at 84-82 on a pair of free throws by Justin  Fritts with 12 seconds left in regulation. Shepherd missed a layup on its next possession and
Ritz drained a pair of free throws with four seconds left to secure the win for the Cardinals.

Shepherd hit on 23-of-51 field goals (45.1 percent) with a 7-of-15 (34.8 percent) effort from three-point range. The Rams connected on 29-of-39 free throws (74.4 percent)

Wheeling Jesuit connected on 29-of-58 field goals (50 percent) with an 8-of-23 effort (34.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals were 20-of-25 from the foul line (80 percent).

The Cardinals had a 33-29 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 17 turnovers and committed 15.

Shepherd falls to 10-6, 5-5 in MEC play, while Wheeling Jesuit improves to 7-7, 3-6. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
