Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Shepherd University to a 78-60 win over Wheeling Jesuit in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. The Rams won their third consecutive game and have won eight of their last 10 contests.
Johnson hit on 10-of-17 shots with a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range. She was 2-of-2 from the foul line. She also grabbed six rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 12 points and game-highs of eight assists and five steals, while senior guard
Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was also in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Jaana Motton scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Cardinals. Breanna Butler added 14 points.
Shepherd had a 41-34 lead at the break behind 20 first half points from Johnson.
Wheeling Jesuit rallied to within nine points at 63-54 after a layup by Jaila Bryant with 5:40 remaining. Shepherd went on an 11-2 run to open up a 20-point lead to pull away for the win
Shepherd shot 47.6 percent (30-63) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (5-15) from three-point range. The Rams shot 68.4 percent (13-19) from the charity stripe.
Wheeling Jesuit connected on 35.1 percent (20-57) from the floor with a 30.8 percent (4-13) performance from beyond the arc. The Cardinals hit on 80 percent (16-20) of their free throws.
The Rams had a 39-35 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 17.
Shepherd improves to 12-4, 9-1 in MEC action, while Wheeling Jesuit falls to 8-5, 5-4. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Notes: Rachel's Johnson's 26-point effort was a point shy of tying her career-high output… she scored 20 points or more for the third time this season… the Rams improved to 6-1 at home this season.
