Cunningham Reaches 1,000-Point Mark; Fairmont State Rallies Past Shepherd Men

Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. –  Nick Harney scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Fairmont State to an 89-77 win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at Fairmont State on Thursday night.

Senior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) led the Rams with 18 points and four assists.  He connected on 5-of-9 field goals with a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc. He was 6-of-9 from the foul line. Cunningham (1,011) reached the 1,000-point mark in just his third year with the Rams.

Sophomore guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) added a season-high 16 points and added four assists, while freshman forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) contributed 12 points on a 6-of-12 shooting effort.

Freshman guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School)  was also in double figures for the Rams with 10 points.

Chase Morgan added 17 points, while Jamel Morris had 15 for the Falcons. Thomas Wimbush added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Shepherd shot 76.2 percent (16-21) from the floor in the first half to take a 42-35 lead at the break. Cunningham and Muhammad each had nine first half points.

Fairmont rallied in the second half with a 63.3 percent (19-30) field goal percentage with a 66.7 percent (6-9) effort from three-point range.

Shepherd hit on 26-of-43 field goals (57.8 percent) with a 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) effort from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 21-of-30 free throws (70 percent).

Fairmont State connected on 32-of-62 field goals (51.6 percent) with a 9-of-20 effort (45 percent) from beyond the arc. The Falcons were 16-of-23 from the foul line (69.6 percent).

The Falcons had a 30-26 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 19.

Shepherd falls to 10-7, 5-6 in MEC play, while Fairmont State improves to 11-6, 8-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 4 p.m. contest.
