Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Shepherd University to a 103-77 win over West Virginia State in MEC women's basketball action at West Virginia State on Saturday.
Mason connected on 10-of-13 shots with a 4-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 2-of-2 from the foul line. Mason also had four assists.
Senior guard
Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while senior guard
Briana Vaden (Stockton, Calif./McNair/San Joaquin Delta College) and sophomore forward
Kristina Prange (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) each tossed in 12 points. Vaden also had six assists.
Senior center
Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) had 10 points and sophomore forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Deyanna Styles scored 20 points to lead West Virginia State. Shealyn Shafer added 15 points and game-high eight rebounds.
The Rams shot a red-hot 72.7 percent (24-33) in the first half to take a commanding 59-31 lead at halftime. Shepherd led by at least 23 points throughout the second half.
Shepherd shot 65.1 percent (41-63) from the floor with a 68.8 percent effort (11-16) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 55.6 percent (10-18) from the charity stripe.
West Virginia State connected on 41.8 percent (28-67) from the floor with an 18.2 percent (2-11) performance from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets hit on 84 percent (21-25) of their free throws.
The Jackets had a 40-28 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 16.
Shepherd improves to 13-5, 10-2 in MEC action, while West Virginia State falls to 5-11, 3-8. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host University of Charleston for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
