Shepherd Women Downed by Charleston

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  --  LeAnne Ross scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to lead University of Charleston to a 71-62 win over Shepherd University in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Thursday.

Ross connected on 6-of-10 shots with a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She was 7-of-8 from the foul line.

Senior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) led the Rams with 17 points. Sophomore guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 15 points, and game-highs of eight assists and four steals. 

Freshman guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) was also in double figures with 11 points, while sophomore forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) had eight points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Monet Saunders had 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for Charleston. Ashley Milligan added 11 points, while Nichole Perry had 10.

Charleston had a 37-35 lead at halftime.

Shepherd opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take an eight-point lead at 47-39 with 14:29 remaining.

After the Shepherd lead dwindled, the Rams took a seven-point lead after a layup by Arden at 56-49 with 7:46 to play. Charleston proceed on an 11-3 run to take the lead for good at 61-59 after a layup by Saunders with 3:14 left in the contest.

Shepherd shot 41.1 percent (24-58) from the floor with a 27.8 percent effort (5-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 64.3 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe.

Charleston connected on 42.9 percent (21-49) from the floor with a 38.9 percent (7-18) performance from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles hit on 66.7 percent (22-33) of their free throws.

UC had a 38-32 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 16.

Shepherd falls to 13-6, 10-3 in MEC action, while Charleston improves to 15-4, 10-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Glenville State for a 2 p.m. contest for Jefferson Security Bank Day.
