Shepherd Men Down Notre Dame in Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman guard Skyler Roman Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and freshman guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) each scored a team-high 27 points to lead Shepherd University to a 120-114 double overtime win over Notre Dame College in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Davis hit on 8-of-14 shots from the floor with a 6-of-11  effort from three-point range. He was 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Roman was 5-of-10 from the floor with a 1-of-3 performance from beyond the arc. He was 16-of-17 from the foul line. Roman added five assists.

Senior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) added 21 points. Junior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and tied Roman for team-high assist honors. Freshman forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) was in double figures with 12 points.

Tyree Gaiter scored a game-high 30 points and dished out a game-high 11 assists for the Falcons. Lawrence DeArmond added 29 points and 13 rebounds, while Oliver Megins tossed in 23 points.

The Falcons forced overtime on three free throws with seven seconds left in regulation by Gaiter to tie the game at 90-all.

McDonald hit a jumper with 37 seconds left in the first overtime session and hit 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds left to knot the game at 106-all.

The Rams outscored the Falcons, 14-8, in the second overtime. Shepherd hit 12-of-14 free throws in the period.

Shepherd hit on 35-of-75 field goals (46.7 percent) with a 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) effort from three-point range. The Rams drained 41-of-49 free throws (83.7 percent).

Notre Dame College connected on 38-of-84 field goals (45.2 percent) with a 14-of-40 effort (35 percent) from beyond the arc. The Falcons were 24-of-33 from the foul line (72.7 percent).

Notre Dame had a 48-44 rebounding advantage. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 14.

Shepherd improves to 8-3, 3-2 in MEC play, while Notre Dame falls to 7-4, 3-2. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Urbana for a 7:30 p.m. contest..

Notes: Roman and Davis each posted career-highs with their 27 point efforts... several Butcher Center records were tied or set in the game... Roman tied the mark for most free throws made (16).. Shepherd's 41 free throws made and 49 attempts set new marks...Shepherd's 120 points tied the mark set in 1996 against Shenandoah... The 234 combined points broke the old mark of 223 set against West Liberty in 2011 and 2013... the 40 three-point attempts by Notre Dame broke the old mark (38) set by the Falcons in 2014.
