McDonald Hits 1,000-Point Mark; Shepherd Men Defeat Urbana

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) went over the 1,000-point mark for his career and senior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) scored a team-high 15 points to lead Shepherd University to a 75-64 win over Urbana in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.

McDonald (1,006 career points) had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He reached the 1,000-point mark when he drained a jumper with 12:46 remaining in the first half.
Cunningham hit 4-of-9 shots from the floor with a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range. He was 3-of-4 from the line. He added three assists and three steals.

Freshman forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) was added 15 points and grabbed eight boards, while freshman guard Skyler Roman Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was also in double figures with 10 points.

Carlas Jackson had a game-high 16 points for Urbana. Mike Newton added 12 points, while John Summers had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Shepherd had a 35-25 advantage at halftime.

The Rams would lead by as many as 16 points in the second half, but Urbana would battle to within six points at 68-62 after a layup by Chris Cromity with 1:34 left.  Shepherd hit 5-of-6 free throws in the game's final moments to secure the victory.

Shepherd hit on 27-of-64 field goals (42.2 percent) with a 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) effort from three-point range. The Rams drained 15-of-21 free throws (71.4 percent)

Urbana connected on 27-of-64 field goals (38.6 percent) with a 4-of-20 effort (20 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights were 16-of-23 from the foul line (69.6 percent).

Shepherd had a 40-36 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 17.
 
Shepherd improves to 9-3, 4-2 in MEC play, while Urbana falls to 4-8, 1-5. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to top-ranked West Liberty for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
