Shepherd Rallies Past Concord; Earls Sets Pair of Kicking Marks

ATHENS, W.Va.  – Junior running back Jabre Lolley (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) scored on a three-yard run with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Shepherd University to a 35-28 win over Concord in MEC football action at Concord on Saturday.

Shepherd improves to 7-0, 7-0 in conference play, while Concord falls to 4-4, 4-4.

Concord took a 7-0 lead when Brian Novak teamed with TJ Smith on a 27-yard scoring pass with 9:06 left in the first quarter.

Shepherd tied the game at 7-all when junior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) fired a 30-yard scoring strike to senior wide receiver Dalton Boyd (Winchester, Va./Sherando /William & Mary) with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Senior kicker Ryan Earls (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) connected on a 41-yard field goal  with 11:29 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 10-7 advantage. Earls' field goal was the 35th of his career, breaking the old mark of 34 held by Eric Dobratz (2008-11).

Novak connected on a 14-yard scoring pass to Smith with 7:21 left on the second quarter to take a 14-10 lead.

Shepherd cut the lead to 14-13 when Earls connected on a 32-yard field goal with 1:39 left in the half.
Concord scored on the opening drive of the second half on a 52-yard run by Calvinaugh Jones with 13:41 left in the third quarter to take a 21-13 advantage.

Lolley scored on a four-yard run with 4:44 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-19. A two-point conversion pass attempt was incomplete.

Lolley stumbled and then plunged into the end zone from one-yard out with14:56 left in the fourth quarter to give the Rams a 25-21 lead. Lolley was stopped short on a two-point attempt. The score was set up by a blocked punt by freshman running back Reggie Carroll (New Castle, Del./William Penn).

Concord took a 28-25 lead when Novak teamed with Tiko Henderson on a 17-yard scoring pass with 8:46 left in the fourth quarter.

Earls connected on a 33-yard field goal with 5:04 left in regulation to tie the game. His three field goals on the day give him 14 on the year to set a Shepherd single season mark. This breaks the old mark of 12 he shared with John Treadway (1984).

Shepherd's winning score was set up by a fourth down stop by sophomore linebacker James Gupton (Waldorf, Md./North Point). Gupton shot the gap and dropped Jones for a four-yard loss on fourth-and-one with 1:44 remaining.

Ziemba hit Boyd on a 31-yard pass and Brown on a 13-yarder prior to the score.

Ziemba completed 21-of-30 passes for a career-high 374 yards and a touchdown. Novak completed 18-of-26 passes for 283 yards and three scores for the Mountain Lions.

Junior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) paced the Rams with 10 receptions for 185 yards, while Boyd added four catches for 117 yards. Jermeil Douse had 10 receptions for 164 yards for Concord.

Senior running back Allen Cross (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had 13 carries for 44 yards and Lolley added 13 carries for 26 yards for the Rams. Jones rushed 25 times for 146 yards for the Mountain Lions.

Shepherd gained 439 yards of total offense while Concord amassed 464.

Gupton led the Shepherd defense with a game-high 14 tackles (four solo).  Senior defensive back Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) added 11 stops. Austin Dodson had 10 tackles (four solos) for the Mountain Lions.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Liberty for a noon contest.
