Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Shepherd University to an 87-76 win over Virginia Union in men's basketball action in the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Saturday night. The win gave Shepherd head coach
Justin Namolik his 100th career victory.
Burgess connected on 7-of-7 field goals and was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Five of his field goals were dunks.
The Rams had six players in doubles figures as sophomore forward
AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) had 14 points, freshman guard
Marcus Adkison (Annandale, Va./St. Andrew's Episcopal) added 13, junior guard
Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and senior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) each had 11, and sophomore guard
Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) tossed in 10.
McTavish handed out a team-best five assists and Adkison had a game-high four steals. Junior forward
Mike Reed (Abington, Md./Patterson Mill) tied Virginia Union's Tavon Mealy for game-high rebounding honors with eight boards.
Ray Anderson led Virginia Union with 18 points. Robert Valentine added 15, while Devin Moore and Mealy each chipped in with 12.
Shepherd shot 43.1 percent (28-65) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (9-27) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 22-of-28 free throws (78.6 percent). Virginia Union shot 42.3 percent (30-71) from the floor with a 31.8 percent effort from beyond the arc. The Panthers hit 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) free throws.
Shepherd had a 43-39 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. when they face Clarion in final day action of the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge.
