Shepherd Women Downed by Winston-Salem State

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Kandace Tate scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Winston-Salem State to a 68-46 win over Shepherd University in women's basketball action at the Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Sunday.

Shepherd falls to 0-2, while Winston-Salem State improves to 1-1.

Tate connected on 9-of-17 shots from the floor and was 3-of-3 from the foul line.

Junior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high nine boards to pace the Rams. She also had a game-high five steals

Junior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and  freshman guard Kristen Nunn (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) each added six points.

Briana Arnold had 12 points and seven boards for Winston-Salem State. Awa Kalmstrom contributed eight points and eight assists.

The Rams connected 32.2 percent (20-62) from the floor with a 9.1 percent (1-11) effort from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 45.5 percent of its free throws (5-11). Winston-Salem State hit on 49.2 percent (29-59) of its field goals with a 28.6 percent (2-7) effort from beyond the arc. The Rams drained 72.7 percent (8-11) of their free throws.

Winston-Salem State had a 49-27 advantage in rebounding. Shepherd forced 20 turnovers and committed 12.

Shepherd returns to action on Wednesday when they host Chowan for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
