Strong Second Half Lifts #1 West Liberty Past Shepherd Men

Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Seger Bonifant scored 22 points and Devin Hoehn added 21 to lead top-ranked West Liberty to a 95-71 win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at West Liberty on Thursday night.

Shepherd falls to 3-3 overall, 0-3 in conference play, while West Liberty improves to 7-0, 3-0.

Bonifant connected on 10-of-17 field goals and was 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. Hoehn was 7-of-12 from the floor with a 4-of-6 performance from three-point range. He added a 3-of-4 effort from the charity stripe.

Senior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) led the Rams with 18 points. McTavish hit on 6-of-14 field goals with a 4-of-9 effort from three-point range. He was 2-for-2 from the foul line.

Freshman forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added 15 points, while sophomore forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) had nine points and eight boards.

David Dennis Jr. added 16 points and 11 assists for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd trailed by only two points at 41-39 behind 15 first half points from Roman and 10 from Burgess. The Hilltoppers shot 64.5 percent (20-31) from the floor and 70 percent (7-10) from beyond the arc in the second half to pull away for the win.

Shepherd shot 39.4 percent (26-66) from the floor with a 25.9 percent (7-27) performance from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 12-of-16 free throws (75 percent). West Liberty shot 53.8 percent (35-65) from the floor with a 48 percent (12-25) effort from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers hit 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) free throws.

Rebounds were even at 37-37. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 16.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 2 p.m. game.
