Shepherd Men Outlast UVa-Wise

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) scored 22 points and freshman guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 21 to lead Shepherd University to a 95-92 win over UVa-Wise in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.

Cunningham connected on 8-of-11 field goals with a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. He was 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. He added six rebounds and four assists.

Davis hit on 6-of-13 from the floor with a 5-of-11 effort from three-point range.  He was 4-of-7 from the foul line.

Freshman forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed six boards, while junior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) added 12 points.

Freshman guard Skyler Roman Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added eight points and a team-high five assists and senior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) contributed six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Tyler Maggard had a game-high 24 points to lead Wise. Brian Sydnor added 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Matt Day fired in 21 points.

Shepherd had a 44-37 advantage at the break with Cunningham (8), Davis (8), and Ryan McTavish (8) combining for 24 first half points.

The Rams went on a 12-2 run late in the game to take a 20-point lead at 88-68 with 3:23 remaining in the game. Cunningham had seven points to fuel the run.

Wise went on a 22-7 run to get within five points at 95-90 after a pair of free throws by Charles George with 15 seconds left and each team added two points down the stretch as the Rams prevailed. The Cavaliers drained four three-pointers during the run.

Shepherd hit on 37-of-64 field goals (57.8 percent) with a 12-of-22 effort (54.5 percent) effort from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 11-of-17 free throws (64.7 percent).

UVa-Wise connected on 31-of-70  field goals (44.7 percent) with a 16-of-39 effort (41 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers were 14-of-18 from the foul line (77.8 percent).

Shepherd had a 38-33 edge on the boards. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 11.

Shepherd improves to 14-13, 9-12 in MEC play, while UVa-Wise falls to 2-24, 1-20. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State for Senior Day/United Bank Day at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale.
