SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard
Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded game-highs of 19 points and 17 rebounds to lead Shepherd University to a 74-63 win over UVa-Wise in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday.
Weakland was 7-of-13 from the floor with a 3-of-4 effort from three point range. She was 2-of-2 from the foul line. Weakland equaled her career-high with her 19-point effort and set a career-high mark with 17 boards.
Sophomore guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Senior center
Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) had 13 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard
Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tossed in 13 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Kayla Carey had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Cavaliers. Blair Harding added 10 points, while Kehan a Grayer had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Shepherd had a 36-26 lead at halftime as Johnson (11) and Weakland (9) teamed for 19 first half points.
The Rams opened up the second half on a 12-8 run to take a 48-34 advantage with 12:50 remaining in the game. Flinchum had eight points during the run.
Wise used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to seven points at 60-53 after a pair of free throws by Naya Williams with to 6:19 to play, but would get no closer.
Shepherd shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the floor with a 42.1 percent effort (8-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 66.7 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe.
UVa-Wise connected on 35.4 percent (23-65) from the floor with a 15.4 percent (2-13) performance from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers hit on 75 percent (15-20) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 44-39 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 16.
Shepherd improves to 19-8, 16-5 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise falls to 9-18, 8-13. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State at 2 p.m. for Senior Day/United Bank Day in the regular season finale.
