Shepherd Men Edged by Notre Dame

Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Will Vorhees hit a jumper with five seconds left in regulation to lift Notre Dame College to an 87-86 win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at Notre Dame on Thursday night.

Freshman guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) led the Rams with 24 points. Davis hit on 7-of-9 field goals with a 5-of-6 effort from three-point range. He was 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Senior guard Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) and freshman forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) each added 17 points.

Senior forward Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. He also added four assists. Junior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) had eight points and handed out a team-high five assists.

Kyauta Taylor led Notre Dame with 24 points. Lawrence DeArmond had 19 points and seven rebounds, Vorhees added 15 points, while Tyree Gaiter contributed 12 points and a game-high seven assists.

Notre Dame had a 37-32 lead at the break.

The Rams trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half. Shepherd and Notre Dame traded lead four times in the game's final 1:09. Shepherd took an 86-85 lead on a three-pointer by Carr with 16 seconds left in regulation to set the stage for Vorhees' game-winner.

Shepherd hit on 32-of-60 field goals (53.3 percent) with an 11-of-21 effort (52.4 percent) effort from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 11-of-11 free throws (100 percent).

Notre Dame connected on 33-of-60 field goals (55 percent) with a 12-of-28 effort (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Falcons were 9-of-15 from the foul line (60 percent).

The Rams had a 32-27 edge on the boards. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 12.

Shepherd falls to 12-10, 7-9 in MEC play, while Notre Dame improves to 12-10, 8-8. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Urbana for a 4 p.m. contest.
