Austin Cunningham (Vincent, Ohio/Warren Local/Ohio Valley) hit a jumper as time expired to lift Shepherd University to a 71-70 win over Urbana University in MEC men's basketball action at Urbana on Saturday.
Junior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) led the Rams with a game-high 21 points. He drained 7-of-15 field goals with a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. McTavish was 3-of-3 from the foul line.
Cunningham fired in 15 points and had team-highs of five assists and three steals. Freshman forward
AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) added 11 points, while freshman guard
Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) tossed in nine.
Senior forward
Morgan McDonald (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) had seven points and tied freshman forward
Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) for team-high rebounding honors with seven boards. McDonald also had a game and career-high four blocked shots.
Myles Busby led Urbana with 24 points and a game-high six assists. Carlas Jackson and Ognjen Rebic each added 14 points. Rebic also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Urbana had a 28-26 lead at the break.
The game featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties.
The lead changed four times in the last 2:56 of the game. Busby was successful on a three-point play with 2:56 left to give the Blue Knights a 68-67 lead. Sophomore guard
Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) hit a layup to give the Rams a 69-68 advantage with 2:35 left. Rebic made a layup with 2:16 remaining to give Urbana a 70-69 lead to set the stage for Cunningham's game-winner.
Shepherd hit on 27-of-62 field goals (43.5 percent) with an 8-of-19 effort (42.1 percent) effort from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 9-of-11 free throws (81.8 percent).
Urbana connected on 27-of-56 field goals (48.2 percent) with a 6-of-19 effort (31.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights were 10-of-12 from the foul line (83.3 percent).
Urbana had a 37-28 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 17 turnovers and committed 12.
Shepherd improves to 13-10, 8-9 in MEC play, while Urbana falls to 5-18, 2-15. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host West Liberty for Brown's Tire Night at 7:30 p.m.
