URBANA, Ohio -- Senior guard
Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Shepherd University to an 80-64 win over Urbana University in MEC women's basketball action at Urbana on Saturday.
Johnson connected on 9-of-18 shots from the floor with a 2-of-6 effort from three-point range. She was 1-of-1 from the foul line. Johnson added seven boards and a pair of assists.
Sophomore forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) added 14 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) added 12 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Freshman guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) contributed 10 points and a game and career-high eight assists.
Katy Barkley had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Knights. Tori Purk added 15 points, while Brittany Atkinson tossed in 11.
Urbana had a 38-36 lead at halftime as Barkley (10) and Purk (10) combined for 20 first half points.
Shepherd opened the second half on a 17-4 run to take an 11-point lead at 53-42 after a layup by Johnson with 14:41 remaining. Urbana cut the advantage to six points at 55-49 after a three-pointer by Atkinson with 9:57 left, but would get no closer.
Shepherd shot 45.6 percent (36-79) from the floor with a 28.6 percent effort (4-14) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 80 percent (4-5) from the charity stripe.
Urbana connected on 35.3 percent (24-68) from the floor with a 19 percent (4-21) performance from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights hit on 70.6 percent (12-17) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 47-44 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 10.
Shepherd improves to 16-7, 13-4 in MEC action, while Urbana falls to 1-22, 1-16. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host West Liberty at 5:30 p.m. for Brown's Tire Night/Pink Game.
