Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept UVa-Wise in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Monday. The Rams recorded a 6-3 win in game one and added a 13-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind a sacrifice fly from senior catcher
Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken), an RBI-single from senior first baseman
Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) and an RBI-double from junior shortstop
Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State).
The Rams added three more runs in the third as Wolfe and Porter singles and later scored on a two-run single off the bat of junior designated hitter
Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC).
Wise scored three runs in the fifth behind a Bill Steven RBI-single, a Ty Marshall bases-loaded walk, and sacrifice fly from Jordan Olinger.
Steven went 2-for-3 to lead Wise.
Senior pitcher
Austin Hale (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville District/Frederick CC) (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 Ks, 4 BB) picked up the win to even his mark at 1-1. He got relief help from junior
John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB) and senior
Brian Martin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 Ks, 0 BB). Martin picked up his third save of the year in relief. Steven Klaiber (4.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 Ks, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Cavaliers.
Shepherd pounded out 16 hits en route to the win in the nightcap.
Senior outfielder
Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 3-for-3 with a homer, a triple, and a double to lead the Rams. He drove in four runs.
Wolfe added a 2-for-3 effort with a two-run blast, while sophomore outfielder
Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) had a 2-for-4 outing with a three-run homer.
Ryan Dickt had a pair of hits with a solo blast and Brett Yates added two hits for the Cavaliers.
Senior starter
Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5 Ks, 2 BB) picked up the win to improve to 3-0. Griffin Duy took the loss for the Cavaliers.
Shepherd improves to 10-2, 10-2 in conference play, while UVa-Wise falls to 0-8, 0-4. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
