Box Score 2 FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with Fairmont State in MEC softball action at Fairmont on Wednesday. The Rams held on for a 9-8 win in game one, while Fairmont State posted a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd got a three-run homer from sophomore first baseman
Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson), a two-run blast from freshman designated player
Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville), and a solo homer by junior outfielder
Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) in the game one triumph.
Senior catcher
Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams. Senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and freshman shortstop
Courtney Clemons(Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) each added a pair of hits.
Carlie Mundie went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Falcons.
Sophomore pitcher
Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (7.0 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 Ks, 3 BB) (5-1) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Bailey Shade (3-2) took the loss for the Falcons.
Amanda Skidmore hit a two-run homer, while Courtney Iacobacci, Addie Fullen, and Terri Lynn Wolfe each added a solo blast to lead the Falcons in the nightcap
Skidmore went 3-for-4 to pace Fairmont State.
Shepherd scored a run in the sixth as Schaefer singled and later scored on a single by Clemons. The Rams added a final tally in the seventh when Plunkett singled and later scored on a ground out by Schaefer.
Clemons, Taylor, Snyder, and Schaefer each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (4-3) took the loss for the Rams. Devin Williams (3-0) gained the win for Fairmont State.
Shepherd moves to 9-6, 2-4 in MEC action, while Fairmont State is now 11-4, 3-3. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
