Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Shepherd University split doubleheader action with Glenville State in MEC softball at Glenville State on Sunday. The Pioneers gained a 6-5 win in game one, while the Rams earned the split with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap.
The Rams used a 10-hit attack en route to the nightcap win.
Shepherd got a solo homer from freshman outfielder
Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie), a two-run blast from senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern), and a three-run homer from senior catcher
Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) to power past the Pioneers.
Mackenzie Smith went 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead Glenville State.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5-3) (6.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 Ks 2 BB) gained the win for the Rams. Sam Weaver took the loss for the Pioneers.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second in game one on no hits. Plunkett and freshman designated player
Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) both walked and later each scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams added a run in the third behind and RBI-single off the bat of Schaefer.
After Glenville State plate single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Pioneers scored four runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Bailey Rabel belted a three-run homer to key the rally.
Shepherd rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh behind an RBI-single by Staley and an RBI-double by Schaefer.
Schaefer went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams, while senior third baseman
Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) and Staley each added a pair of hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 5 Ks, 1 BB) (5-2) took the loss for the Rams. Chelsey Hager earned the win in relief for the Pioneers.
Shepherd moves to 10-7, 3-5 in MEC action, while Glenville State is now 6-14, 2-6. The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
