Shepherd Softball Drops Pair to West Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Shepherd University dropped a pair of games to West Virginia Wesleyan in MEC softball doubleheader action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. The Bobcats gained a 4-2 win in game one and added a 17-6 victory in the nightcap.

The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind an RBI-single by Megan Malenstyn and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Rebekah Honce.

Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 in the third as junior outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single off the bat of senior third baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy).

Wesleyan stretched its lead to 3-1 on a solo homer by Krista Waggoner in the bottom of the third.

Freshman designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville)  singled and later scored when freshman outfielder Jessica Robinson (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) reached on an error in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Bobcats added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Honce.

Snyder and senior outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (5-3) took the loss for the Rams. Hannah Vet (8-3) earned the win for the Bobcats

The Bobcats used a 15-hit attack en route to the nightcap win.

Wesleyan got a pair of homers from Brooklyn Waddell, while Honce, Waggoner, and Rachel Ramsey also added round-trippers.

Snyder went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to pace the Rams. Freshman shortstop Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5-4) took the loss for the Rams. Alyssa Shawgo (3-2) earned the win for the Bobcats.

Shepherd moves to 10-9, 3-7 in MEC action, while West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 17-5, 9-1. The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Urbana for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
