Shepherd Women Fall to Notre Dame in MEC Semifinals

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Senior center Gabby Flinchum (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) had a game-high 24 points, but Notre Dame College held on for a 75-65 win over Shepherd University in semifinal action of the Mountain East Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday.

Flinchum hit on 8-of-11 shots with a 8-of-13 effort from the foul line. She added eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Senior guard Briana Vaden (Stockton, Calif./McNair/San Joaquin Delta College) added 14 points and a game-high three steals, while senior guard Rachel Johnson (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added nine points,  four rebounds, and two assists.

Senior guard Alex Weakland (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had a game-high six assists and tied Flinchum and Notre Dame's Martha Nagbe for game-high rebounding honors with eight. Freshman guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) and sophomore forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) each chipped in with eight points.

Nagbe had 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half for the Falcons. Lauren Langenderfer and Jessica Garcia each added 13 points, while Kim Cook added 12.

Shepherd had a 30-28 lead at halftime with Flinchum (10) and Vaden (9) teaming for 19 first half points. The Rams erased a seven point Notre Dame advantage and took their first lead of the game at 30-28 on a layup by Flinchum with 59 seconds left in the half.

Notre Dame opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 38-30 lead and led by as many as 14 points in the second stanza.

Shepherd whittled down the lead to just three points at 62-59 after Johnson sunk a three-pointer with 4:40 remaining. The Falcons hit 9-of-10 free throws in the game's final minutes to secure the win.

Shepherd shot 38.3 percent (23-60) from the floor with a 21.1 percent effort (4-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 71.4 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe.

Notre Dame connected on 42 percent (21-50) from the floor with a 31.6 percent (6-19) performance from beyond the arc. The Falcons hit on 75 percent (27-36) of their free throws.

The Rams had a 40-37 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 17.

Shepherd falls to 21-9, while Notre Dame improves to 20-11. Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday when they take on West Liberty, a 70-68 winner over Wheeling Jesuit in overtime in the other semifinal contest, in tournament final action at the Charleston Civic Center at 1 p.m. The Rams await word on possible seeding for regional play.
