Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept West Virginia State in MEC softball doubleheader action at West Virginia State on Saturday. The Rams gained a 3-1 win in game one and added a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took advantage of an infield error to score two runs in the second inning in game one.
The Rams added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by freshman shortstop
Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin).
State's lone run came on a Sydney Kaplan RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore pitcher
Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 Ks, 2 BB) (6-5) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Chelsea Parkins (7.0 IP, 4 H, 4 Ks, 1 BB) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Senior third baseman
Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a two-run homer to pace the Rams in the nightcap victory.
Senior catcher
Shanan Plunkett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern, and Clemons each added a pair of hits for the Rams.
Micca Mirabella went 2-for-3 to pace West Virginia State.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Calli Norton (4.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Shepherd improves to 13-12, 6-8 in MEC play, while West Virginia State falls to 19-11, 7-7. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to University of Charleston for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
