Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University split with the University of Charleston in MEC softball doubleheader action at Charleston on Sunday. The Rams gained an 8-7 win in game one while Charleston earned a split with a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd scored three runs in the second inning of game one with a two-run double by senior third baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) keying the rally.
The Rams tacked on four more runs in the fourth with freshman shortstop Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) smacking a two-run double and sophomore first baseman Alexandra Witt (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson) belting a two-run blast to highlight the rally.
Clemons scored the game-winner in the sixth as she singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Witt.
Clemons went 4-for-4 with thre rusn scored to lead the Rams.
Bethany Williams wnet 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Golden Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher Kirsten Barstad (Joppa, Md./Mercy) (7.0 IP, 9 H 7 R, 3 ER, 5 Ks, 3 BB) (7-5) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Courtney Fain (7.0 IP, 7 H 8 R, 6 ER, 6 Ks, 5 BB) (12-5) took the loss for Charleston.
Rachel Toppings went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Charleston in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 8 Ks, 1 BB) (7-6) took the loss for the Rams. Jessie Rowe (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 Ks, 1 BB) (7-2) gained the win for the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd moves to 14-13, 7-9 in MEC play, while University of Charleston is now 26-7, 11-5. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Millersville for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
