Shepherd Women's Lacrosse Outlasts West Virginia Wesleyan for Fourth Straight Win

Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Junior midfielder Erin Phelan (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) scored three goals and senior attacker Georgia Karr (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) recorded three assists to lead Shepherd University to a 7-6 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in MEC women's lacrosse action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.

Junior midfielder Theresa Lang (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding), sophomore attacker Brooke Hunley (Monrovia, Md./Linganore), freshman midfielder Courtney Matthews (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), and sophomore midfielder Haley Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) each recorded a goal for the Rams. Price also added an assist.

Natalie Schaffner and Kim Lubic each had a pair of goals and to lead the Bobcats. Emily Noel added a goal and a pair of assists.

Shepherd closed the first half on a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 lead into the break.

Hannah Antonelli opened up the second half scoring with an unassisted goal at the 26:06 mark to cut the lead to 6-4.

Phelan found the back of the net on an unassisted tally with 11:50 remaining to give Shepherd a 7-4 advantage.

Lubic scored an unassisted goal at the 8:45 mark and Schaffner added another on a feed from Noel with 6:16 left to get the Bobcats to within a goal.

Taylor Holmes had a chance to tie the game for Wesleyan with 3:20 left, but her free position shot went wide and Shepherd held on for the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Savannah Shores (Trappe, Md./Easton) recorded  four saves for the Rams, while Lexi Swisher had 12 saves for the Bobcats.

Shepherd had a 22-17 advantage in shots and a 22-16 edge in ground balls. The Rams had a 12-3 advantage in draw controls.

Shepherd improves to 8-3, 4-0 in Mountain East Conference play, while West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 9-4, 1-2. The Rams return to action on Friday when they take on Rollins College for a 7 p.m. contest at Stevenson University.
