Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University fell twice to West Virginia Wesleyan in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday. The Bobcats gained a 10-1 win in game one and added a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.
West Virginia Wesleyan pulled away with six runs in the sixth inning in game one. Morgan Bruce belted a three-run homer to key the rally.
Olivia Gore and Krista Waggoner each went 3-for-3 to lead the Bobcats.
Freshman shortstop
Courtney Clemons (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) went 2-for-3 with an RBI-double, while senior outfielder
Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher
Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5.1 IP, 12 H, 8 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (8-8) took the loss for the Rams. Hannah Vet (6.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 0 BB) (12-3) gained the win for the Bobcats.
Schaefer blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning in the nightcap to give the Rams a 3-2 advantage.
Wesleyan took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth behind an RBI-double by Krista Waggoner and an RBI-single by Rebekah Honce.
Waggoner went 3-for-4 and Honce and Gore added a pair of hits to lead the Bobcats.
Freshman pitcher
Carmen Vivar (Robertsdale, Ala./Robertsdale) (6.0 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss for the Rams. Alyssa Shawgo (4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 0 BB) earned the win for the Bobcats. Anna Eggleston (2.2 IP, 2 Ks, 0 BB) tossed hitless ball in relief to gain the save.
Shepherd falls to 16-17, 9-11 in MEC play, while West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 26-6, 14-2. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Fairmont State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
