Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Glenville State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Glenville State in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. The Rams recorded a 12-5 win in game one and added a 16-2 triumph in the nightcap. Shepherd extended its winning streak to 19 games with the sweep.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in game one as Justin Lewis reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a ground out by Tyler Wiseman.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame on a three-run blast to left by senior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken).

The Rams added four runs in the second with a two-run single by senior first baseman Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) keying the rally.

Glenville State cut the lead to 7-2 in the third as Heath Swisher singled and scored on a double by Wiseman.

Senior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) hit a solo blast in the fourth to key a two-run rally and give the Rams a 9-2 advantage.

The Rams added three more runs in the fifth with junior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) hitting a solo homer and Wilson smacking an RBI-double to highlight the rally.

Glenville State plated three runs in the sixth as John Hunter, Randal Baugher, and Swisher each drove in a run.

Wilson went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI to pace the Rams. Porter added a 3-for-3 effort.

Swisher and Baugher each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.

Junior starter Sam Crater (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York/Frederick CC) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 8 Ks, 1 BB) picked up the win to improve to 6-1. Pioneer starter Brock McClung (0-5) took the loss.

Shepherd used a 17-hit attack in the nightcap en route to the victory.

Freshman designated hitter Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) posted a 4-for-4 effort at the plate to pace the Rams. He belted a three-run homer in the first and added a two-run blast in the second.

Wyshinski added a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI, while sophomore outfielder Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary), Wilson, and Wolfe each added a pair of hits.

Swisher, Baugher, and Khalfani Mar'na each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Junior pitcher Jamie Driver (Broad Run, Va./Kettle Run) (4.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 Ks, 1 BB) (6-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Brody Heflin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 K, 1 BB) gained his second save of the season. Glenville State starter Ar'tom Rank (1-3) took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 22-2, 22-2 in conference play, while Glenville State drops to 4-22, 4-16. The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
