Shepherd Softball Drops Pair to West Liberty

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University fell twice to West Liberty in MEC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Sunday. The Hilltoppers took a 7-2 victory in game one and added a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a two-run homer by freshman designated player Molly Staley (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville).
West Liberty answered back in the third on a three-run homer by Savanna Seiger.

The Hiltoppers later added solo blasts from Charley Troggio and Kelsi Johnson en route to the victory.

Kalyn Hanby and Taylor Zeigler each had 3-for-4 outings to lead West Liberty.

Sophomore pitcher Tara Hanson (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (5.1 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (9-10) took the loss for the Rams. Seiger (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 Ks, 4 BB) earned the win for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd fell behind 9-3 in the nightcap but staged a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior outfielder Tayler Schaefer (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and freshman second baseman Sarah North Belcamp, Md./Harford Technical)each drove in a run and senior third baseman Savannah Snyder (Elkton, Md./Padua Academy) had a two-run single to highlight the rally.

Schaefer and junior outfielder Kass Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Seiger went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Hanby went 2-for-5 with three RBI to pace the Hilltoppers.

Freshman pitcher Carmen Vivar (Robertsdale, Ala./Robertsdale) (4.0 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 0 Ks, 1 BB) (1-4) took the loss for the Rams. Paige Creamer (7.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 Ks, 8 BB) gained the win for the Hilltoppers.

Shepherd falls to 18-21, 11-15 in MEC play, while West Liberty improves 18-30, 8-18. The eighth-seeded Rams will face top-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan in first round action of the MEC Tournament at noon on Friday in Salem, Virginia.

SHEPHERD BASEBALL SWEEPS URBANA

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University swept Urbana in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams recorded an 8-2 win in game one and added a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.

Junior shortstop Tre Porter (Stephens City, Va./Sherando/Potomac State) had a three-run double to key a four-run first inning for the Rams in game one.

Senior catcher Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown/USC Aiken) belted a two-run homer in the fourth to help the Rams pull away.

Sophomore outfielder Jonathan Sarty (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove/William & Mary) and Porter each had  a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Michael Barea and Roman Gammell each had two hits for the Blue Knights.

Senior pitcher Bryan DiRosario (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield Secondary School) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 Ks, 3 BB) (7-1) gained the win for the Rams. Jackson Everman (3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 2Ks, 3 BB) (2-5) took the loss.

The Rams used a 13-hit attack in the nightcap victory.

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead in the first inning by taking advantage of five hits and an error.

Senior outfielder Matt Wilson (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/Essex CC) went 3-for-3 with a solo homer for the Rams.

Senior third baseman Bryce Shemer (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill/Colorado Mesa) and senior first baseman Dom Wyshinski (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) each added a pair of hits. Wyshinski also drove in two runs and scored two.

Junior John Bentley (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (6.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 3 BB) (4-2) gained the win for the Rams. Blue Knight starter Feliz Ojeda (0.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 0 Ks, 2 BB) (2-3) took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 32-10, 31-9 in MEC play, while Urbana falls to 15-20, 13-17. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
