Shepherd Football Rallies Past UVa-Wise

Box Score WISE, Va. --  Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) completed  21-of-41 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 41-10 win over UVa-Wise in MEC football action at UVa-Wise on Saturday.

Shepherd improves to 3-0, 3-0 in MEC play, while UVa-Wise falls to 0-3, 0-2.

UVA-Wise took a 7-0 lead with 12:46 left in the first quarter when Daniel Lewis teamed with Terrence Younger on a 56-yard scoring strike.

The Cavaliers took a 10-0 lead when Trent Martin connected on a 43-yard field goal with 8:05 left in the first quarter.

Shepherd got on the scoreboard when sophomore wide receiver Angelo Jean-Louis (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central/Fork Union/Marshall) blocked a Cavalier punt out of the end zone for a safety with 5:04 left in the second quarter.

Ziemba found Jean-Louis in the back of the end zone on a 12-yard scoring pass with 1:36 left in the half.  Ziemba then tossed a pass to junior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 10-10.

Shepherd took a 17-10 lead when Ziemba and Jean-Louis teamed on an 18-yard score with 11:35 left in the third quarter.

The Rams increased their lead to 20-10 on a 38-yard field goal by senior kicker Ryan Earls (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) with 6:49 left in the third quarter.

Shepherd took a 27-10 advantage when Ziemba fired a 27-yard scoring strike to Brown with 11:32 left in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Connor Jessop (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run/Virginia Tech) combined with freshman wide receiver Wanya Allen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) on a 67-yard scoring pass to up the lead to 34-10.

Freshman running back Reggie Carroll (New Castle, Del./William Penn) scored on a four-yard with 3:45 remaining to complete the scoring.

Daniel Lewis completed 13-of-31 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown for Wise.

Brown had eight catches for 157  yards to pace the Rams. Younger had five receptions for 137 yards for the Cavaliers.

Shepherd totaled 438 yards of total offense, while Wise had 254. Neither team could muster much of a ground attack as Shepherd rushed for 66 yards and Wise totaled 41.

Senior defensive back Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) led the Rams with nine stops (six solo). Junior linebacker Connor Simpson (Clifton Forge, Va./Alleghany) and junior outside linebacker Jaylen Johnson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) each added six tackles.  Zack Blair had a game-high 13 tackles to lead the Cavaliers.

Freshman punter Ruan Venter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) helped the Rams with field positions with seven punts for a 41.7 average. He placed four inside-the-20 and had three punts of 50 yards or more.
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Notre Dame at noon for Homecoming.
