INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Laura Szorenyi scored 21 points and Shealyn Shafer added 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead West Virginia State to a 79-61 win over Shepherd University in MEC women's basketball action at West Virginia State on Sunday.
Shepherd falls to 4-9, 3-4 in MEC action, while West Virginia State improves to 6-7, 3-4.
Sophomore guard
Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a team-high 18 points to pace the Rams. Arden connected on 8-of-19 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 0-of-2 from the foul line. Arden also tied junior guard
Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) with a team-high five assists.
Junior forward
Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) nearly recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and nine blocked shots. Her nine blocks tied a Shepherd single game mark. Freshman guard
Kristen Nunn (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) tossed in 14 points and grabbed six boards
Trina Current added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Deyanna Styles added nine points and a game-high eight assists.
State had a 41-27 lead at the break behind 12 first half points from Szorenyi.
The Rams connected on 37.1 percent (26-70) from the floor with a 25 percent (3-12) effort from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 66.7 percent of its free throws (6-9). West Virginia State hit on 39.1 percent (27-69) of its field goals with a 42.1 percent (8-19) effort from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets were successful on 77.3 percent (17-22) of their free throws.
West Virginia State had a 52-37 advantage in rebounding. Shepherd forced 16 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to University of Charleston for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
