Shepherd Men Downed by #3 Fairmont State in Overtime

Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. –  Matt Bingaya scored 33 points and Jamel Morris added 23 to lead third-ranked Fairmont State to a 101-91 overtime win over Shepherd University in MEC men's basketball action at Fairmont State on Thursday night.

Shepherd falls to 9-8 overall, 4-7 in MEC action, while Fairmont State improves to 16-1, 10-1.

Bingaya hit on 12-of-19 field goals with a 9-of-12 effort from the foul line. He grabbed 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) led the Rams with 24  points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) had 23 points and six boards.

Sophomore guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 14 points and four assists, while junior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had 11 points, four boards, and six assists.

Jason Jolly added 21 points for the Falcons, while Shamgod Wells added 10 points and a game-high nine assists.

Shepherd opened the game on an 8-2 run and took a 44-36 lead into the break.

The Rams led by as many as 15 points in the second half but the Falcons rallied and had a 83-81 lead after a layup by Morris with 48 seconds left in regulation..

Shepherd took an 84-83 lead after a three-pointer by McTavish with 37 seconds left and Davis hit 1-of-2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining to give the rams a two point lead.

Jolly drained a pair of free throws with two seconds left to force overtime.

The Falcons outscored Shepherd, 16-6, in the extra session to avoid the upset.

Shepherd shot 46.3 percent (31-67) from the floor with a 50 percent (15-30) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 14-of-22 free throws (63.6 percent). Fairmont State shot 50 percent (34-68) from the floor with a 37.9 percent (11-29) effort from beyond the arc. The Falcons hit on 22-of-29 free throws (75.9 percent).

Fairmont State had a 40-39 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 22.

The Rams are slated to return to action on Saturday when they host Glenville State for a 4 p.m. game.
