Shepherd Men Rally Past Concord for First Conference Win

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Sophomore guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) scored  23 points and sophomore forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) added 20 to lead Shepherd University to a 90-83 win over Concord in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.

Shepherd improves to 6-5 overall, 1-4 in MEC action, while Concord falls to 8-3, 3-2.

Davis connected on 7-of-10 shots with a 5-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. He drained all four of his free throw attempts. Carr hit on 6-of-15 field goal attempts with a 3-of-5 performance from three-point range. He was 5-of-5 from the foul line. Carr also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Senior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) tossed in 17 points, while sophomore guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) contributed 15 points and a game and career-high 11 assists. Junior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had 13 points, five boards, seven assists, and  a game-high four steals.

Terry Hopewell had 25 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Mountain Lions. Jametrius Wade added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Rob Reed chipped in with 13 points.

Shepherd took its first lead of the second half at 78-77 on a three-pointer by Davis with 3:35 remaining. The Rams took the lead for good at 83-81 on a dunk by Carr with 2:11 remaining. The Rams hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

Shepherd shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor with a 42.3 percent (11-26) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 15-of-16 free throws (93.8 percent). Concord shot 52.5 percent (32-61) from the floor with a 23.5 percent (4-17) effort from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions hit on 15-of-19 free throws (78.9 percent).

Concord had a 41-26 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed just six.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host UVa-Wise for a 7:30 p.m. game.
