Balanced Attack Leads Shepherd Men Past UVa-Wise

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Senior forward Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) and sophomore forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./Saint James School) each scored 23 points to lead Shepherd University to a 99-94 win over UVa-Wise in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

Shepherd improves to 7-5 overall, 2-4 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise drops to 2-10, 0-6.

McTavish hit on 9-of-16 shots with a 2-of-6 effort from three-point range. He hit on 3-of-4 free throws. Carr connected on 9-of-17 shots with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He drained 3-of-4 free throws. Carr also grabbed nine boards.

Sophomore guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 21 points, while junior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had 19 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Sophomore guard Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) dished out a team-high six assists to go along with five points.

Matt Day led the Cavaliers with 35 points. He was 12-of-17 from the floor with an 8-of-11 effort from three-point range. Day sunk 3-of-5 free throws. Dimitri Sousa and Gervelle Kidd each added 14 points, while Philip Owens II had 13 points and a game-high seven assists.

UVa-Wise used a 12-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Day to take a 73-62 lead with 10:23 remaining in the game. Shepherd answered back with a 17-0 run to take a 79-73 lead with 6:33 left. The Cavaliers cut the Shepherd lead to two at 86-84 on a three-pointer by Kidd with 3:00 left, but would get no closer.

Shepherd shot 47.9 percent (34-71) from the floor with a 26.1 percent (6-23) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 25-of-32 free throws (78.1 percent). UVa-Wise shot 50 percent (33-66) from the floor with a 45.9 percent (17-37) effort from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers hit on 11-of-14 free throws (78.9 percent).

Shepherd had a 44-31 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed eight.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 4 p.m. game.
