Shepherd Women Down UVa-Wise for Second Straight Win

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Sophomore guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) scored a game-high 28 points to lead Shepherd University to a 69-62 win over UVa-Wise in MEC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

Shepherd improves to 4-8, 3-3 in MEC action, while UVa-Wise falls to 6-4, 2-4.

Arden connected on 11-of-20 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-5 effort from the foul line.

Freshman guard Kari Lankford (York, Pa./West York Area) added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) had nine points and seven boards, while sophomore guard Tiffany McKinney (Edgewater, Md./South River/Anne Arundel CC) fired in eight points off the bench.

Blair Harding scored 17 points and Kayla Carey added 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Taylor Sandridge added 12 points and a game-high five assists.

The Rams led by as many as 15 points in the first half, but UVa-Wise rallied to tie the game at 30-30 at halftime.

Shepherd had an eight-point lead dwindle to three points at 60-57 after a layup by Carey with 4:29 to play, but the Rams responded with a 6-0 run by hitting 3-of-4 free throws and a three-pointer by Arden to take control of the game at 66-57 with 1:55 remaining.

The Rams connected on 44.4 percent (28-63) from the floor with a 40 percent (4-10) effort from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 75 percent of its free throws (9-12). UVa-Wise hit on 38.5 percent (25-65) of its field goals with an 18.2 percent (2-11) effort from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers were successful on 62.5 percent (10-16) of their free throws.

UVa-Wise had a 47-32 advantage in rebounding. Shepherd forced 19 turnovers and committed 12.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 2 p.m. contest.
