Shepherd Football Defeats Concord

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) completed 20-of-26 passes for 253 yards and rushed for a touchdown, while freshman running back Brandon Hlavach (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) rushed 15 times for 108 yards and a pair of scores to lead Shepherd University (7-0, 7-0 MEC) to a 21-7 win over Concord University (2-6, 2-6 MEC) in MEC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Hlavach scored on a one-yard plunge with 10:36 left in the first quarter. Junior kicker Zachary Wise (Berkeley Springs, W.Va./Berkeley Springs) added the extra point.

Concord tied the game when Brian Novak teamed with Davon McGill on a 23-yard scoring pass with 12:55 left in the second quarter.

Shepherd took a 14-7 lead when Hlavach raced 46 yards down the left sideline with 9:49 left in the second quarter.

Ziemba ran 13 yards for a score with 1:29 left in the third quarter to complete the scoring.

Senior wide receiver CJ Davis (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) had seven receptions for 54 yards, senior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) added four catches for 75 yards, while senior tight end Jamie Deason (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) added three receptions for 76 yards to lead the Shepherd receiving corps. McGill had four catches for 51 yards to lead the Mountain Lions.

Novak completed 13-of-20 passes for 120 yards for Concord.

Shepherd gained 400 yards of total offense. Concord had 188 total yards with 41 coming on the ground.

Senior linebacker Octavius Thomas (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) led the Shepherd defense with eight tackles (seven solo) with 2.5 tackles-for-loss. Junior defensive end Myles Humphrey (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise) and junior linebacker James Gupton (Waldorf, Md./North Point) each added seven stops. Akil Bordelon recorded a game-high 12 tackles (11 solo) for the Mountain Lions.

Shepherd returns to action next Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a noon contest.
