Shepherd Football Downs Urbana to Clinch MEC Title

Box Score URBANA, Ohio – Senior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) completed 23-of-33 passes for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while freshman running back Brandon Hlavach (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) added 20 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University (10-0, 10-0 MEC) to a 38-14 win over Urbana (3-8, 2-8 MEC) in MEC football action at Urbana on Saturday. The victory clinched the Mountain East Conference title for the Rams.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Hlavach scored on a five-yard run with 5:06 left in the first quarter. Junior kicker Zachary Wise (Berkeley Springs, W.Va./Berkeley Springs) added the extra point.

Shepherd increased its lead to 14-0 when Ziemba teamed with senior wide receiver CJ Davis (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) on a 38-yard scoring pass with 3:55 left in the first quarter.

The score was set up by a fumble recovery on the kickoff by sophomore linebacker Patrick Prosser (Newport News, Va./Denbigh).

The Rams increased their lead to 21-0 when Ziemba tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to redshirt-freshman running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman/WVU) with 8:49 left in the second quarter.

Urbana cut the lead to 21-7 when DarSean Watt scored on a one-yard plunge with 5:38 left in the second quarter.

Hlavach scored on a two-yard run to open the second half scoring with 11:31 left in the third quarter to up the lead to 28-7.

The Blue Knights answered back with a with 9:22 left in the third quarter when Marcus Thomas fired a two-yard scoring pass to Trevon Saunders to cut the deficit to 28-14.

Wise connected on a 28-yard field goal with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

Hlavach scored his third touchdown of the day on a five-yard run with 10:33 left in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Davis had seven receptions for 125 yards to pace the Shepherd receivers. Saunders had seven catches for 93 yards for the Blue Knights.

Watts had eight carries for 57 yards to lead the Blue Knights.

Graham completed 21-of-42 passes for 269 yards for Urbana.

Shepherd gained 520 yards of total offense, while Urbana totaled 340.

Senior defensive back Tre Sullivan (Accokeek, Md/Gwynn Park) led the Rams with eight tackles (five solo). Carlton Rematt and Tommy Harris each had 10 tackles to lead the Blue Knights.

Notes: Shepherd posted back-to-back undefeated regular seasons for the first time since 2005-06 … the undefeated regular season was the sixth in program history (1955, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2015) … Shepherd is now 38-2 all-time in MEC play … Billy Brown went over 1,000 receiving yards for the second consecutive season … Hlavach rushed for 100 yards or more for the fourth time this season.
