Shepherd Men Hold Off Glenville State

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) and junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) each scored 25 points to lead Shepherd University (2-1, 1-0 MEC) to an 89-86 win over Glenville State (0-1 0-1 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday night.

Davis hit on 9-of-13 field goals with a 6-of-10 effort from three-point range and a 1-of-2 effort from the foul line. Carr drained 11-of-14 shots with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. He sunk 1-of-2 free throws. Carr also added a team-high 10 rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots.

Junior guard Skyler Roman Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) tossed in 14 points, while sophomore forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) had nine points, seven rebounds, and a game-high 11 assists.

Jon Dunmeyer led the Pioneers with a game high 31 points. He was 10-of-18 field goals with an 8-of-13 effort. Darhius Nunn added 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Shepherd took the lead for good at 71-68 on a three-pointer by Davis with 6:42 remaining.

Shepherd led by as many as 10 points in the final minutes but Glenville State rallied to within two points at 88-86 after a three-pointer by Dunmeyer with 39 seconds remaining.

Davis sunk 1-of-2 free throws with 20 seconds left to give the Rams a three-point advantage. The Pioneers missed a pair of three-point attempts in the game's final seconds.

Shepherd hit on 36-of-65 field goals (55.4 percent) with an 11-of-25 (44 percent) effort from three-point range. The Rams drained 6-of-13 free throws (46.2 percent).

Glenville State connected on 29-of-68 field goals (42.6 percent) with a 14-of-35 effort (40 percent) from
beyond the arc. The Pioneers were 14-of-15 from the foul line (93.3 percent).

Shepherd had a 36-34 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 14.

The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
