Mason Reaches 1,000-Point Mark; Eighth-Ranked Virginia Union Tops Shepherd Women

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) went over 1,000 points for her career, but eighth-ranked Virginia Union (5-0) pulled away for a 90-68 win over Shepherd University (2-4) in women's basketball action at Virginia Union on Monday night.

Mason (1,001 career points) tossed in six points while adding added six assists and four rebounds.

Junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) led the Rams with 16 points. Tibbs hit on 5-of-10 shots with a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. She connected on 3-of-3 free throws.

Senior guard Sammy Bane (Chantilly, Va./Middleburg Academy) added 13 points, while freshman guard Lauren Reed (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) tossed in 11.

Senior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) contributed nine points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) dished out a team-high seven assists.

Brittany Jackson scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Panthers. Lady Walker added 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Virginia Union outscored Shepherd 27-10 in the third period to take control of the contest.

Shepherd shot 35.8 percent (24-67) from the floor with a 36 percent effort (9-25) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 84.6 percent (11-13) from the charity stripe.

Virginia Union connected on 44.9 percent (35-78) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (5-15) performance from beyond the arc. The Panthers hit on 60 percent (15-25) of their free throws.

Virginia Union had a 58-35 advantage in rebounds. Shepherd forced 11 turnovers and committed 14.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to West Liberty for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
