Top-Ranked West Liberty Edges Shepherd Men

Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Devin Hoehn scored a game-high 24 points to lead top-ranked West Liberty (7-0, 3-0 MEC) to a 67-64 win over Shepherd University (3-2, 2-1 MEC) to a 78-61 in MEC men's basketball action at West Liberty on Wednesday night.

Junior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Rams. He added a game-high four steals.

Junior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) tossed in 14 points, while sophomore forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) contributed eight points, six rebounds, and tied West Liberty's David Dennis with a game-high seven assists.

Brandon Smith had 12 points and Zac Grossenbacher added eight points and 10 boards for the Hilltoppers.

The Rams held a 40-38 halftime lead behind 21 first half points from Davis (11) and Carr (10).

Shepherd held a slight lead throughout most of the second half.

Hoehn was successful on a three-point play with 2:31 remaining to give West Liberty a 63-62 advantage. The Hilltoppers closed the game on a 4-2 run to seal the win.

Shepherd hit on 24-of-61 field goals (39.3 percent) with a 9-of-28 (32.1 percent) effort from three-point range. The Rams had a 7-of-9 effort (77.8) from the foul line.

West Liberty connected on 27-of-74 field goals (36.5 percent) with a 6-of-41 effort (14.6 percent) from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers were 7-of-8 from the foul line (87.5 percent).

Shepherd had a 44-39 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced eight turnovers and committed 16.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for Camper Appreciation Day at 4 p.m.
