Shepherd Women Edged by Puerto Rico-Mayaguez

Box Score BAYAMON, P.R. – Maria Medina scored 22 points and H. Argueta added 18 to lead University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez to a 65-62 win over Shepherd University (3-7) in women's basketball action in Puerto Rico on Thursday.

Senior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored 21 points and had six rebounds to pace the Rams.

Freshman guard Lauren Reed (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) tossed in 14 points, while senior guard Cara Mason contributed eight points and four assists.

Puerto Rico-Mayaguez took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Medina at 48-46 with left in the fourth period.

Shepherd closed to within two points at 64-62 on a three-pointer by junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) with two seconds remaining in regulation, but Medina drained 1-of-2 free throws in the last seconds to cap the win.

Shepherd shot 50 percent (25-50) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (6-15) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 85.7 percent (6-7) from the charity stripe.

University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez connected on 51.9 percent (28-54) from the floor with a 20 percent (3-15) performance from beyond the arc. UPRM hit on 50 percent (6-12) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 28-26 edge in rebounds. Shepherd forced 16 turnovers and committed 19.

The Rams return to action on Friday in Puerto Rico to take on University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 5 p.m.
