Virginia State Outlasts Shepherd Women

Box Score SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Kristina Prange (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) scored a career and game-high 19 points to lead the Rams, but Virginia State (10-2) held off Shepherd University (4-8) for a 72-67 victory in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Friday.

Prange hit on 6-of-8 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-6 from the foul line.

Junior guard Kayla Tibbs (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) added 15 points, while freshman guard Lauren Reed (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) tossed in 12.

Senior guard Cara Mason (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) had a game-high six assists to go along with five points, while senior forward Liz Myers (York, Pa./Eastern York) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and posted a game-high three blocked shots.

Nandi Taylor led the Trojans with 18 points. Taylor Daniels added 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Rams had a 30-22 lead with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Reed, but the Trojans closed the half on an 11-0 run to take a 33-30 led into the break.

Virginia State led by as many as 16 points in the fourth period but the Rams used an 18-5 run to rally to within three points at 68-65 after a layup by junior guard Morgan Arden (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) with 1:51 left. Prange had 13 points during the run – fueled by three three-pointers.

After a layup by Daniels with 1:14 left gave the Trojans a 70-65 lead, Prange hit a jumper with 51 seconds remaining to make it a one possession game.

The Rams missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with four seconds left and Daniels drained a pair of free throws for the Trojans in the final seconds to seal the win.

Shepherd shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (10-25) from three-point range for the game. The Rams shot 45.5 percent (5-11) from the charity stripe.

Virginia State connected on 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor with a 42.1 percent (8-19) performance from beyond the arc. The Trojans hit on 75 percent (12-16) of their free throws.

Virginia State had a 40-35 edge in rebounds. Shepherd forced 19 turnovers and committed 20.

The Rams return to action on Jan. 3 when they travel to Concord for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
